a family court judge sentenced him to five months in jail for failing to pay $9018 in child support Arthur Lee Fillmore was apprehended by four sheriff's deputies at the law offices of a Fort Worth attorney shortly before noon Fillmore escaped from bailiffs Monday in Special Master Patricia Andrews' basem*nt courtroom after she sentenced him to 168 days in jail for contempt of his 1976 child support order Fillmore 37 is the father of a 6-year-old' daughter Officials in the Child Support Enforcement Division said Fillmore eluded the law a second time Monday night by vaulting a fence when a it helps them out" he said Jim Kendrick a quadraplegic who is one of three wheelchair-bound patrons at Hoffman's station said the Burleson station is the only one in the state offering full service to handicapped customers at self-serve pumps Kendrick who cannot use his legs and has little movement in his arms said Tennessee has a law requiring gas stations to provide full service to handicapped motorists at no extra charge He said he is hoping the Texas Legislature will pass a similar law when it convenes next year and that he has already asked State Rep Bruce Gibson Godley to introduce such a bill next year "I burn about a tank of gas a week in my van and it saves me about 5 or 6 cents a gallon" said Kendrick who drives a specially equipped van on trips to both Dallas and Fort Worth on a regular basis Kendrik 50 became 90 percent disabled more than 15 years ago after a collision between his car and a train at a railroad crossing between Crowley and Benbrook The accident occurred on Friday Jan 131967 "Everytime Friday the 13th rolls around I think about it and either stay in bed or get under it" he said But since that accident he has persuaded about 20 Burleson businessmen to provide wheelchair ramps to make their shops more accessible to the handicapped He now hopes to convince more gas stations in Tarrant County to follow Hoffman's lead By ROBERT MAHONEY Star-Telegram Writer Disabled drivers are getting the red carpet treatment without paying for it at a gasoline station in Burleson that may be a state leader in giving handicapped motorists full service at self-service prices "We have been doing this for quite some time But some of my six handicapped customers felt like they were imposing on us so we recently posted signs to make it official and put them more at ease" said Lynn Hoffman owner of the Mobil station at Highway 174 and Johnson Avenue in Burleson Hoffman said he does not mind catering to the handicapped and his non-handicapped
