Retail leadership is such a unique job, it is comprised of so many different hats you must wear to be successful. You have to drive sales, motivate your team, handle HR situation, oversee visuals, merchandising, inventory and above all else create an incredible atmosphere for both the guests coming in and your team who is working with you. I’ve found after 20 years in retail that the best store managers understand that there is no “one size” fits all solution. A great leader will set clear expectations and provide the tools needed to succeed but will adjust and morph their coaching style to each person to allow them to flourish! Passei por assistente de vendas, vendedor, comprador, gerente de produto, supervisor de contas, até me tornar gerente nacional de Key Accounts; passando por 3 empresas e 2 mercados totalmente diferentes (varejo e indústria automotiva). Totally agree with this. The more you do the more you will learn. Be involved in all aspects of the business and the more you learn the more you will achieve. Think of the 80's version of the Karate Kid. Paint the fence, clean the csr etc and if you do that in store in terms of getting involved in all you will fly very quickly.

So much depends on which sort of retail you have chosen. High end specialist retailers require a very detailed awareness of brand history and very product specific, detailed technical knowledge. The mass market, requires a more generic skillset and knowledge regarding material variations, origination and fabric source, fit and finish. Very often those that know and sell the most are recognised by being promoted. This can often have a negative impact on the individuals effectiveness as a salesman , because they are often driven by sales success and don’t often have the correct level of ‘soft’ man management skills. This in turn has a double impact on destabilising both sales and atmosphere on the floor.

In my experience as sales manager for 4 banks in East Africa, I used a technique called "Who are the competitors?" To unlock more sales leads. It worked all the time as competitors always have similar requirements and if you can service one then you can service all.It is a great technique that needs No new products, No new resources and No new skills to close. Think of it this way if you sold to Coca-Cola chances are Pepsi-Cola will also have a need for the same service in that region
